Welcome to AABHE! The core values of the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education are grounded solidly in the legacy of the former AAHE Black Caucus established in 1980. That legacy includes a focus on a range of professional and leadership development activities that meet the needs of Blacks at all levels and segments of higher education. As our new structure continues to evolve and offer additional services, we remain committed to our longstanding initiatives. They include: A special thanks goes to 84 individuals and 6 institutions for stepping forward to become charter members. Their financial commitment enabled us in getting started. We thank the American Council on Education for their continued support of our Leadership and Mentoring Institute. Our partnership with Diverse Issues in Higher Education and the Negro Educational Review has enabled AABHE members to receive subscriptions to both publications with their membership.Leadership and Mentoring Institute Harold Delaney Educational Achievement Award Graduate Student Recognition Program and Awards Summits and Conferences on Blacks in Higher Education International Study Tours to Africa, The Caribbean Islands, and South America. If Blacks are to continue to make important contributions to an increasingly diverse world, we must do so from positions of knowledge, skill, and strength. To that end we look to build on our collaboration with state and campus associations of Blacks in higher education across the nation as work to link and leverage resources, expertise and networks. Three state associations have already linked with us under the category of affiliate organizations representing Texas, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Since the National Conference held this April in Houston Texas, Illinois and Missouri have become affiliates. The Black Faculty and Staff Association at Johns Hopkins University is the first campus based organization to affiliate. The National Black Graduate Student Association has also become an affiliate organization. We hope you will join our new journey. Roland B. Smith, Jr., President AABHE
