Karen Eley
Sanders is a native of Hampton, Virginia. She joined Virginia
Tech in July of 2001 as director of the Center for Academic
Enrichment and Excellence and was appointed Assistant Provost
and Director of Academic Support Services in August of 2004. Dr.
Sanders earned a B.S. and M.S. in Psychology from Virginia State
University in Petersburg. Her doctoral dissertation in the in
the field of Adult and Developmental Education from the
University of Arkansas, Fayetteville received a national award
from the American Association of Higher Education Black Caucus.
In 2003 she was certified as a developmental education
specialist by the Kellogg Institute at Appalachian State
University.
Dr. Sanders has
worked in higher education as a counselor, administrator, and
instructor. Prior to coming to Virginia Tech Dr. Sanders spent
four years as the director of Minority Education Services and
five years as the director of the Boyer Advising Center at the
University of Arkansas. She has also taught psychology at
Virginia State University and the University of Illinois. Dr.
Sanders has made numerous presentations at the state and
national level which relate to minority affairs, academic
advising, and retention program development and implementation.
She also serves as Senior Retention Associate with Teresa Farnum
and Associates.
She is a member
of Asbury United Methodist Church, a life member of Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and member of the Montgomery
County Branch of the NAACP. Her husband, Dr. Reliford Sanders
Jr. is a clinical psychologist and Virginia Tech, and they have
two children, Theo and Micaela.
